## Recommendation

**Keep the flat coastal parts of Benalmádena and Fuengirola as the strongest overall destination choice. Keep Torre del Mar, particularly La Vega 14, as the strongest currently evidenced apartment-value alternative. Add Protur Roquetas as a serious third finalist after its fresh €6,062.40 all-inclusive Family Suite checkout.** Continue to consider central Estepona and central La Cala de Mijas if a qualifying property becomes available. Conil is a credible holiday alternative, but the Atlantic weather tradeoff matters more when the family has ruled out driving on eclipse day.

This is a recommendation, not a family decision. It follows the current brief: six people, including four adults and children aged approximately 6½ and 8½; about two weeks combining Nazaré and Spain; five to eight nights at the eclipse base; no overnight flight connections; and no driving on 2 August. Kid compatibility and parental ease share priority with the grandmothers' practical access. They can manage one flight of stairs and a gentle ten-minute climb. Price is balanced against comfort, location and amenities. See the family brief (retained research record).

The real choice is **hotel service and pool facilities versus three bedrooms, shared living space and a kitchen**. That choice can reasonably outweigh a destination ranking. A two-room hotel allocation with the parents and children together does not provide the same privacy as a three-bedroom apartment. Conversely, a shared apartment pool and self-catering do not reproduce resort service.

## Practical ranking

| Priority | Destination | Why it stays here | What would change the judgment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | **Benalmádena Costa / Fuengirola beachfront** | Best established combination of hotel service, pools, nearby food, coastal walking and roughly three minutes of totality. The project has already examined specific walking viewpoints near finalists. | A large premium is justified only if the family values the service and accepts the room-sharing arrangement. Restrict Benalmádena to the useful coastal area; a town label does not establish a gentle daily walk. |
| 2 | **Torre del Mar** | A credible ordinary beach-week base with the clearest current three-bedroom apartment offers. La Vega 14 combines the desired layout with a pool claim. | It becomes first if the family prefers apartment space and the savings, provided cancellation, pool operation and the actual walking route are resolved. Its shorter eclipse is a real tradeoff. |
| 3 | **Roquetas de Mar / Protur** | The new all-inclusive suite checkout puts this in the practical comparison: all six in one suite, meals included, at roughly the accommodation cost of the central-coast breakfast-only hotels. | It can rise if resort service is the family priority and the transfer, bedroom cooling and physical access work. Its two bedrooms plus sofa bed offer less separation than La Vega's three bedrooms. The more distant eastern location and short totality count against it. |
| 4 | **Central Estepona** | Good beach-and-town combination, with longer totality than the eastern choices. The municipal tourism site describes La Rada as adjacent to the main town streets, with promenade and beach services. | A suitable, priced central unit could move it above Torre del Mar. A remote property with an Estepona address does not supply the central-town benefit. Current leading inventory remains unresolved or excluded. |
| 5 | **Central La Cala de Mijas** | Worth retaining for an apartment-based beach stay. The municipal map helps distinguish the coastal centre from much wider Mijas search results. | A suitable central property could outrank Torre del Mar; the current evidence does not supply that offer. Do not substitute Mijas Pueblo, golf-area units or an uphill/outlying apartment. |
| 6 | **Conil / La Fontanilla resorts** | A substantial alternative if the family particularly wants the resort facilities and Conil setting. Roughly four minutes of totality is attractive. | A convincing six-person offer and practical beach/town access could make it competitive. The Atlantic morning-cloud exposure remains a disadvantage under a fixed local-viewing plan. |

These ranks are judgments about this family's needs, not measured scores. The evidence does not support a defensible fine ranking of weather between Torre del Mar, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, La Cala and Estepona.

Location sources checked on 27 October: [Estepona's La Rada beach](https://turismo.estepona.es/lugares/playa-de-la-rada/), [municipal La Cala map](https://turismo.mijas.es/images/Guias/PLANO%20LA%20CALA%202024/PLANO%20LA%20CALA%202024%20COMPLETO.pdf), [Torre del Mar municipal beach sheet](https://velezmalaga.es/contenido/datos/playas/documentos/FICHA-PLAYA-TORRE-DEL-MAR-jf3lkx.pdf), and [Conil's La Fontanilla page](https://turismoconil.es/es/poi/que-hacer/playas-y-calas/playa-de-la-fontanilla). These support town geography and facilities, not a particular apartment's access or a guarantee of 2027 service.

## The strongest case against this recommendation

**The central-coast hotels may buy less practical comfort than their price suggests.** A family squeezed into one room plus a separate grandmothers' room may prefer three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room. Apartment meals can be flexible rather than burdensome. La Vega 14 could therefore win on both comfort and cost, even before considering the substantial accommodation-price gap. It would be a mistake to assume that hotel service automatically means the easier family week.

The strongest argument against choosing Torre del Mar is different: **a cheap, easily quoted property can distort the destination decision.** Its cancellation conflict, pool conditions and unverified route remain unresolved. If meals, housekeeping and children's facilities substantially reduce parental work, a better-supported hotel stay may be worth paying for. The eclipse also lasts materially longer around Fuengirola and Benalmádena. Duration ranks last in the brief, but it does not have zero value on an eclipse trip. The family should make that tradeoff knowingly rather than inherit it from whichever booking engine worked.

My judgment is now a three-way comparison: **La Vega 14 for apartment space/value; the best complete Best Tritón or Mac offer for central-coast hotel ease; and Protur for an all-inclusive shared suite.** Treat Leonardo as a further benchmark unless its particular room arrangement or experience earns the extra price. Do not choose Torre Plaza solely because it is cheaper than La Vega: the missing pool is a meaningful difference for a week with children.

The fresh [Protur browser addendum](protur-check-2026-10-27.md), read for this assessment, supersedes the earlier no-quote result. It records the exact four-adult/two-child Family Suite checkout for 29 July–5 August at **€6,062.40 including VAT and all-inclusive**, using the non-member advance-labelled rate. The lower €5,456.16 club rate appeared only at room selection. Payment-at-hotel language and cancellation wording were captured, but the 24-hour deadline and previous-day-noon wording are not reconciled; an irrelevant Balearic tax link also leaves tax handling unclear. Do not relabel the checkout rate as a member flexible offer or promise its final refund cutoff. The new price makes the resort a substantive challenger: the parent reports fresh Best/Mac breakfast totals near €6,000, so included meals could outweigh extra transfer cost. That is an inference, pending full-trip comparison.

The [22 October availability review](availability-review-2026-10-22.md) supplies the established property comparison and its limitations. During this assessment, the lead reported fresh 27 October checkout totals of €2,631.70 for La Vega 14 on 29 July–5 August and €1,746.20–€1,774.80 across the three Torre Plaza weeks. Those are the lead's observations, not independent Astra checkout checks. The agency's selected-rate and general-contract cancellation conflict persists. Fresh hotel checks are handled separately; historical hotel prices must retain their dates.

## Astronomy and weather checks

The Instituto Geográfico Nacional's current municipality table gives these reference durations, calculated by subtracting totality start from end:

| Municipality reference point | Duration |
|---|---:|
| Fuengirola | 3m10s |
| Benalmádena | 2m51s |
| Estepona | 3m37s |
| Conil de la Frontera | 4m01s |
| Roquetas de Mar | 1m31s |
| Vélez-Málaga | 57s |

**These are town-hall coordinates, not the hotel or beach points.** Vélez-Málaga's result cannot replace Torre del Mar's coastal estimate, nor Mijas's result La Cala's. The project currently gives about 1m39s for a Torre del Mar reference coordinate; that remains an approximate secondary calculation pending an exact standing-point check. IGN's table places the Sun east to slightly south of east, about 38–41° high for these locations. Its terrain model excludes buildings and vegetation. [IGN overview and municipality-table interface](https://astronomia.ign.es/en/eclipses-de-sol-y-luna/eclipse-total-sol-de-2-de-agosto-2027), [direct public table](https://astronomia.ign.es/resources/informacion-astronomica/eclipses/tablas/eclipse-sol-02-08-2027-tabla.html), [IGN methodology and visualizer](https://eclipses.ign.es/en/condiciones-de-observacion.html).

Jay Anderson's current Eclipsophile analysis supports a broad preference for the Spanish Alboran/Mediterranean coast over the exposed Atlantic coast because of morning marine cloud. That is a regional climatological judgment, not a forecast for 2 August. Its two-summer image survey cannot be converted into an exact probability for Conil or a specific Costa del Sol hotel. Nor is average cloud fraction the same as the probability of seeing totality. The recommendation to move inland is useful to a mobile observer; it does not solve this family's fixed-location requirement. [Eclipsophile's original analysis](https://eclipsophile.com/tse2027/).

There is no reason to revive an eclipse-morning drive to Vejer or another inland backup. For this family, choose a satisfactory local viewing position before booking, then inspect it after arrival. An eastern line of sight at the required elevation is what matters. A sea view alone proves nothing, particularly on an Atlantic beach looking west, and the broad coast-wide assertion in the family brief is too strong.

## Corrections and decisions that matter

1. **Roquetas is an eastern alternative in Almería.** It should not be mentally grouped with the western Conil resorts. Its suite now merits a place among the final three accommodation comparisons, but the location and eclipse advantages are different. The [27 October resort review](western-resorts-2026-10-27.md) supplies room-feature evidence; the later [browser addendum](protur-check-2026-10-27.md) supersedes its no-quote status for Protur.
2. **Keep inventory evidence separate from town quality.** Venalmar, central Estepona and La Cala do not become bad destinations because the desired inventory is absent or difficult to quote. Equally, an accessible engine does not make Torre del Mar the superior holiday by itself. The lead's fresh Venalmar check now starts 12 August, so the older 31 July availability language should not support this trip.
3. **No-day-driving strengthens the Mediterranean case, but removes a weather fallback everywhere.** Accept that residual uncertainty rather than imply the itinerary can guarantee clear skies.
4. **A station connection is not the whole hotel transfer.** Aena currently lists the C1 airport connection to Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Beachfront Benalmádena still needs a last-mile plan. Use that as a transport option, not proof of effortless six-person travel or a guaranteed 2027 timetable. [Aena train information](https://www.aena.es/en/malaga-costa-del-sol/getting-there/trains.html).
5. **Compare the full trip if dates or coast change.** The flight work remains dated. Do not spend an extra connection, awkward transfer or lost holiday day to chase a modest room saving. Conversely, a substantial apartment saving could fund straightforward private transfers and meals out. No new flight price or route timing was verified here.
6. **The next decisive evidence is property-level.** For the apartment: authoritative cancellation terms, pool operation during the stay, bedroom cooling and a usable door-to-food-to-beach route. For the hotel: a complete two-room price, exact beds, room proximity and payment/cancellation terms. For either: an identified walkable eclipse position. More town lists will not resolve those choices.

## Scope

This is an independent synthesis using the current family brief, dated October accommodation research, and fresh primary astronomy and local-location sources. Older August options were read as historical context; their eight-person scenario, inland-drive fallback and contact instructions are superseded. No property was contacted, held or booked. The maintained guide and public site were not edited or published.
