Places to stay and flights for two weeks in Portugal and southern Spain.
The trip
About two weeks in summer 2027: a week near Nazaré in Portugal and a week on the south coast of Spain. Six of us: four adults and two children, who will be 6½ and 8½. We'd fly from San Francisco together. Nothing is booked yet.
The Spain week is built around the total solar eclipse on the morning of Monday 2 August 2027. At roughly 10:47–10:49 a.m. local time, depending on the town, the moon will completely cover the sun. Totality lasts about 1½–3½ minutes across the main places compared here. The sun will be about 40 degrees up in the eastern sky. We need to check the actual eastward view from a nearby beach or other walking spot; a sea view alone does not establish a clear sightline. We plan to walk there that morning rather than drive. After Spain's August 2026 eclipse, traffic on one motorway backed up about 10 km.
The leading flight plan is Portugal first, from 21 July, then Spain from 29 July to 5 August. See Flights below.

Totality happens on Monday 2 August 2027, mid-morning. Figures below are historical module A coastal-point calculations. The 12 October review found that their stated ±2-second accuracy was not independently established; use them as approximate regional comparisons and verify the final coordinates with an established calculator. "Start of totality" is C2, when the Moon fully covers the Sun.

Torre del Mar, added 22 October: within totality. A secondary calculation for 36.742, -4.0929 gives about 1m39s around 10:49 CEST. This is a town reference, not a final apartment or beach standing point. The 56-second IGN result for Vélez-Málaga municipality centre is inland and should not be copied to the coast. Coordinate calculation · IGN
Totality reaches the western places (Sabinillas, Estepona) about three minutes before the eastern ones (Torrox, Almuñécar), and lasts longest in the west. Among the original seven-town comparison, Sabinillas has the longest listed totality and Torrox one of the shortest. The expanded guide includes longer western and shorter eastern alternatives.
Where the sun will be
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Regional calculations place the sun roughly 38–41° above the eastern horizon at totality. Exact direction and altitude depend on the standing point.
A simple obstruction estimate uses obstacle height above the observer, horizontal distance, sun direction and terrain elevation. On level ground, angular height is arctan(height difference / distance); that approximation cannot clear every hill or coast-wide viewpoint. Incomplete mapped building heights and an unmeasured local approach remain material gaps. Verify the actual standing point before treating it as unobstructed.
Viewing spots checked
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Module F examined three candidate viewing points by desktop mapping, for the four Fuengirola/Benalmádena finalist properties, using OpenStreetMap building data out to 500 m toward the sun:
Playa de San Francisco (36.5447, -4.6172), Leonardo Hotel's beach in Los Boliches — 243 m walk, no buildings at all found within 500 m toward the sun.
Playa de Santa Amalia (36.5364, -4.6215), for MalagaSuite in Fuengirola — no buildings found within 500 m toward the sun. The measured 710 m walk is unreliable: it used an approximate location, and the apartment is on the seafront promenade.
Playa Malapesquera (36.5949, -4.5181), shared by Best Triton and the Diana 2 apartment in Benalmádena — 18–100 m walk; eight buildings sit in that direction within 500 m, but the nearest is 297 m away and even the tallest tagged one (30 m) would need to be within about 38 m to block anything.
Not yet done for La Cala, Estepona, Almuñécar, Sabinillas, or Torrox. No equivalent walkable-viewpoint-plus-building check has been run for these five places. No coast-wide obstruction clearance is claimed; no specific spot in any of them has been checked against mapped buildings, and OSM's height tagging is incomplete everywhere, so an untagged tall structure can't be fully ruled out at any point, checked or not.
Traffic and crowds
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Plan no driving on 2 August, especially in the hour or two after totality ends (around 10:50–10:51 local). During Spain's 12 August 2026 eclipse, traffic on Catalonia's AP-7 motorway backed up about 10 km despite access controls. The DGT (Spain's traffic authority) named the post-totality return trip the highest-risk period and told drivers not to stop on the shoulder. None of this is a 2027-specific plan; the DGT is expected to publish one only close to the event.
Beaches are public and need no reservation. Under Spain's Ley de Costas, beaches are public and free to use for walking, bathing and standing. Expect heavy ordinary August crowding on top of eclipse demand — none of the checked viewing points is a designated eclipse venue, so arriving well before first contact to claim space is sensible.
Weather
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
The Eclipsophile analysis supports a broad preference for the Alboran/Mediterranean coast over the exposed Atlantic coast. Its cited 88% Cádiz and 74% exposed-Atlantic sun-visible figures come from a particular two-summer image survey, not a universal town-level probability or a forecast. Mean cloud fraction is a different measure. Neither supports 90–95% or 95%+ claims for individual eastern resorts. Confirm the local viewing point now; weather forecasts become useful close to travel.
Eye safety
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Use undamaged solar viewers from an AAS-listed supplier or its identified authorized reseller. ISO markings and brand names can be counterfeited; labels alone do not establish safety. Follow AAS supplier and viewer guidance.
Use safe viewers during every partial phase. Only within the path, while the Sun is completely covered in true totality, may you remove them; replace them before any bright solar surface reappears. Supervise children. Never look through binoculars, a telescope or a camera optical finder while wearing eclipse glasses. Optical equipment needs appropriate solar filters secured over the front; see AAS viewing guidance.

The main comparison is on Spain's Mediterranean coast, inside the path of totality. Málaga serves the central-coast options; Protur Roquetas is farther east, near Almería, and its Portugal connection and transfers still need pricing. The Mediterranean coast has a better record of clear summer mornings than the exposed Atlantic side, but this is not an eclipse-day forecast.
Astra's independent review recommends comparing three kinds of stay:
Best Tritón or Mac in coastal Benalmádena: two rooms, breakfast, pools and hotel service. Fresh seven-night totals are €5,949.55 and €5,995.75 including VAT, with membership required. Benalmádena/Fuengirola remains the strongest overall destination recommendation for daily ease; Leonardo is a higher-priced benchmark.
La Vega 14 in Torre del Mar: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a shared summer pool. Fresh totals are €2,488.70–€2,631.70 across the three target weeks, plus a refundable €100 deposit. This could be the better choice for space and savings, if the pool, walking route and cancellation terms are confirmed.
Protur Roquetas: one Family Suite, all-inclusive, at €6,062.40 including VAT for 29 July–5 August, non-member. Included meals put it close to the breakfast-only hotel prices. The tradeoffs are extra travel, two bedrooms plus a sofa bed, and shorter totality. Access, bedroom cooling, cancellation and extra-tax wording still need clarification.
This is a recommendation, not a family selection. Hotel service may make the week easier, but sharing a room with the children could outweigh that benefit. An apartment offers more privacy and flexible meals, with more self-catering work. Torre Plaza is cheaper than La Vega but has no advertised pool. Central Estepona and La Cala remain attractive if a suitable offer appears; Conil has a less favorable morning-cloud tradeoff under our no-driving plan.
What matters to us: things the kids will enjoy, an easy week for the parents, and easy access for the grandmothers. One flight of stairs is fine, and a lift helps. A walk-in shower is better, but a bath is OK. Bedrooms need air conditioning in August. Price matters, weighed against space, comfort and location.

La Vega 14 · Torre del Mar
Apartment · three bedrooms and two bathrooms · exact-date offers checked 27 October
Torre del Mar is a seaside town east of Málaga with a beach and promenade. The agency places La Vega 14 in the newer La Vega area, a few minutes' walk from the beach, food and shops. The walking route has not yet been checked in detail.
Eclipse morning: the coast is inside totality. A calculation for central Torre del Mar gives about 1 minute 39 seconds, around 10:49 a.m. The exact beach standing point still needs checking. The plan would be to walk to the beach.
The apartment: 90 m², a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a children's trundle bedroom, with one shower bathroom and one bathroom with a bath. The listing states air conditioning throughout, a lift, access without stairs, included parking and a shared summer pool. Pool opening dates and hours depend on the community. Those access and pool details have not been independently confirmed.
Price:€2,631.70 for 29 July–5 August, including final cleaning and utilities. The final price screen showed all six guests, €893.81 at booking and €1,737.89 due on 28 July. A separate €100 refundable security deposit is due at arrival. The other seven-night offers were €2,560.20 for 30 July–6 August and €2,488.70 for 31 July–7 August. Meals are not included.
Cancellation needs clarification before booking. The selected 29 July rate says free cancellation through 28 June, then a 30% rent penalty. The general contract linked from checkout instead lists 10%, 50% and 100% penalties at different intervals. It is also unclear whether prepaid cleaning and utilities would be refunded. We should get the applicable terms in writing before relying on free cancellation.

Summary
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Torre del Mar is an active apartment comparison after the 22 October search found two exact-party offers. La Vega 14 has the stronger combination of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, bedroom AC, lift, claimed stair-free access and summer pool. Torre Plaza is central and cheaper, with no pool advertised. No property has been selected by the family.
Both again reached final price/payment screens on 27 October for four adults and two children across all three seven-night stays. Ages 6 and 8 were submitted in the search; the final summary echoed the adult/child counts but not ages. Their selected cancellation terms conflict with the agency's general contract. Physical access, walking routes, unit reviews and pool opening remain to verify. The coast is within totality, with approximately 1m39s at a central town reference point; the final standing point still needs checking.

La Vega 14
90 m². One double bedroom, one twin bedroom and one trundle bedroom; two bathrooms, one shower and one bath. The listing states AC in every room, a lift, access without stairs, included parking, a terrace and a shared summer pool. Pool operation depends on community dates and hours. The agency places it in the newer La Vega area, a few minutes on foot from the beach, promenade, restaurants and shops. No exact route or independent access inspection was completed. Unit-specific review quality remains unestablished.
88 m². One double and two twin bedrooms, two bathrooms with baths, AC in the living room and all bedrooms, and a lift. Central location by Iglesia de San Andrés, with beach, food and shops described as walkable. No pool is advertised. A lift does not prove an entirely step-free entrance. Conflicting Airbnb renderings did not establish a reliable current unit rating.
For a 29 July arrival, the selected page says free cancellation through 28 June. La Vega's detailed policy says 0% of rent until that date, 30% from 29 June to arrival, and 100% of prepayment for no-show. The later arrival pages advertise free cancellation through 29 or 30 June. Cutoff time/time zone and treatment of prepaid cleaning/utilities are unclear.
The general contract linked from checkout instead lists 10% at 30 days before arrival, 50% from 29 to seven days, and 100% less than seven days before arrival. It also allows equal-or-better accommodation substitution for specified unforeseen circumstances. These terms conflict with the selected-rate policy. Establish the applicable schedule and refund treatment in writing before relying on the free-cancellation claim.
Check-in is shown as 16:00–17:00 with office key collection. The notes describe out-of-hours code-box collection after full prepayment; optional in-apartment check-in is €10 and was not selected. No contact, booking, payment or account creation occurred.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
The coast is within totality. A secondary astronomy calculation at 36.742, -4.0929 gives approximately 99 seconds, 10:48:32–10:50:10 CEST, maximum 10:49:21, Sun altitude 39.7°. These are town-reference figures, not an exact building or beach standing-point verification. IGN's 56-second Vélez-Málaga municipal-centre result concerns an inland coordinate and is not the coastal duration.
The plan would be to walk to the beach; no eclipse-day drive is assumed. The exact route, standing point and obstruction check remain open.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Torre del Mar is east of Málaga. Airport transfer timing, six-person vehicle cost and the exact apartment-to-beach/food walking routes were not measured in this pass. The agency describes both apartments as near the beach and everyday services. La Vega includes parking; Torre Plaza is central. Do not assume these claims establish a fully flat route or justify changing the unbooked flight plan.
Beach and children
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Both listings describe the beach and promenade as a few minutes on foot. La Vega's trundle bedroom is a plausible children's room, and its summer pool is a family advantage subject to community operating dates. Torre Plaza has no advertised pool. Beach slope, water entry, nearby play facilities and current unit reviews were not independently established.
Access for grandmothers
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Both listings state a lift; La Vega also explicitly claims access without stairs. The family can manage one flight, and baths are acceptable. La Vega has a shower and a bath; Torre Plaza has two baths. Confirm thresholds, lift access from the street, bathroom entry and the actual walking route before treating access as proven.
Heat, weather and sea
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Both listings explicitly state AC in all bedrooms; La Vega states it throughout the apartment. The regional Mediterranean climate comparison is not an eclipse-day forecast. Local wind, waves, sea-entry conditions and shade were not refreshed in this apartment search.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Which cancellation schedule governs, and are cleaning/utilities refunded?
What exact cutoff time and time zone apply?
Will La Vega's pool operate for the chosen week, and with what hours?
Are the listed bed layouts and street-to-door access suitable for all six?
What are the exact beach/food routes, transfer arrangements and key-collection logistics?
Which nearby viewing point provides an unobstructed view without driving?

Torre Plaza · Torre del Mar
Central apartment · three bedrooms and two bathrooms · no pool advertised
In central Torre del Mar by Iglesia de San Andrés, with the beach, promenade, restaurants and shops described as a few minutes away on foot. It shares the town's shorter totality, described above.
The apartment: 88 m², one double bedroom and two twin bedrooms, two bathrooms with baths, air conditioning in the living room and every bedroom, and a lift. A fully step-free entrance has not been confirmed. No pool is advertised, and this search did not establish reliable reviews for the individual apartment.
Price:€1,774.80 for 29 July–5 August, including cleaning and utilities. The final price screen showed all six guests, €636.74 at booking and €1,138.06 due on 28 July. A separate €100 refundable security deposit is due at arrival. The other seven-night offers were €1,773.70 for 30 July–6 August and €1,746.20 for 31 July–7 August. Meals are not included. Checked 27 October.
Cancellation needs clarification before booking. Its selected rate advertises free cancellation until late June, but the same agency's linked general contract lists different penalties. Do not treat this as an unconditional refund promise. La Vega 14 has the stronger pool and family-space combination; Torre Plaza costs less and is more central.
Fuengirola is a practical, walkable seaside town about 25 minutes from Málaga airport, with a direct train. A palm-lined promenade runs about 8 km along wide sandy beaches, flat and paved the whole way, from Sohail Castle in the west to Los Boliches in the east. Near the hotel there are about 50 restaurants and cafés within a five-minute walk and a supermarket about 450 m away, all on flat ground. The Bioparc zoo is in the town centre, about 1 km from the seafront on a flat route. The train station is step-free, so day trips to Málaga are easy.
Eclipse morning: a flat 250 m walk to Playa de San Francisco. Totality there lasts about 3 minutes 6 seconds. A map check found no buildings blocking the view toward the sun.
The hotel: Leonardo is about 250 m from the beach, with a smaller pool than the big resorts. On 27 October, a combined booking summary again showed €7,281 including VAT for 30 July–6 August: a Superior Room for two adults and the children, plus a Comfort Room for two adults, both with breakfast, at the non-member rate. Other weeks were not refreshed.
Cancellation wording conflicts. Both exact-date room displays say free cancellation before 27 July 2027, but generic rate text says until 6 p.m. on arrival day. Plan around the earlier date and clarify which governs. The precise cutoff and payment timing remain unverified.
Still to confirm: exact beds, whether the two rooms are next to each other, and whether we can get a walk-in shower.

Fresh check — 27 October 2026
The same €7,281 non-member breakfast total including VAT was repeated for 30 July–6 August at the personal-details step, with Superior room for parents/children and Comfort room for two adults. The expanded breakdown now exposes conflicting cancellation wording: exact-date text says before 27 July, generic rate text says 18:00 on arrival day. Use the earlier date conservatively and clarify. Payment timing remains unverified. Other target weeks were not refreshed. Evidence: Eclipse-2027-Hotel-Refresh-2026-10-27 and records/search-2026-10-27/sol.
Historical check — 22 October 2026
For 30 July–6 August 2027, the official booking summary carried a Superior Room for two adults and children aged 6/8 plus a Comfort Room for two adults. Breakfast was included in both. The €7,281 total explicitly includes VAT: €4,078 + €3,203, non-member Best Available Rate. Both room cards said free cancellation before 27 July; cutoff hour/time zone and payment timing were not captured. No optional extras were selected.
The current 29 July–5 August and 31 July–7 August searches did not complete usable offers. This does not establish current sellouts or invalidate earlier dated results. Exact beds, room proximity and bathroom assignment remain unconfirmed. 22 October prices and terms

Totality at Los Boliches beach: 3m06s, from about 10:47:17 to 10:50:23 CEST on 2 August 2027 (module A, anchored to IGN town figures, approximate; exact standing-point timing still needs validation).
The sun is at about 39° altitude and 97° azimuth, just south of due east, over the sea.
No driving is needed on eclipse day. Beaches are public and need no reservation, but expect heavy August crowds on top of eclipse visitors.
OpenStreetMap height data is incomplete, so an untagged tall building can't be fully ruled out.
The 710 m walk module F measured for MalagaSuite is unreliable: it used an approximate location, and the apartment's address is on the seafront promenade.

From Málaga airport: a pre-booked minivan for six, about €62–79 each way (2026 published prices). A standard taxi carries four, so six people need two. The C1 train (€2.05 per adult, 30–45 min) is better for day trips than for arrival with luggage: Leonardo is about 1.1 km from Fuengirola station and MalagaSuite about 750 m.
Stations: Fuengirola station is step-free after a Renfe accessibility remodel.
Daily life without a car: from Leonardo, the nearest supermarket is 447 m and the beach 243 m, both flat. There are about 50 restaurants and cafés within 400 m.

The regional climatology supports comparing Mediterranean bases with the more exposed Atlantic/Strait coast; it is not a forecast or an exact probability for this town. August heat, shade and bedroom AC matter. Water temperature, wind, waves and entry conditions vary by beach and day. Benalmádena Costa is the seafront part of Benalmádena, the next town toward Málaga from Fuengirola and about 20 minutes from the airport. The hotels we're looking at are on the flat coastal strip near Puerto Marina, a harbour lined with restaurants, boats and brightly painted buildings. It has the most children's attractions within easy reach of anywhere on our list. The Sea Life aquarium is about five minutes' walk from the marina. The Selwo Marina park is about 3 km away by a short taxi or bus ride. A cable car runs up the mountain from Arroyo de la Miel. There are fewer restaurants right around the hotels than in Fuengirola (about 22 within a five-minute walk). A supermarket is a flat 7–8 minute walk.
Inland, the ground rises steeply. The train station in Arroyo de la Miel is 3 km uphill, so it's a taxi ride, not a walk. Next door, La Carihuela in Torremolinos also has hotels at promenade level and is worth considering.
Eclipse morning: Playa Malapesquera is about 20 m from Best Tritón. Totality there lasts about 2 minutes 54 seconds. A map check found no buildings in the way.
The hotel: Best Tritón is beachfront with pools and family amenities. On 27 October, two Double Rooms with breakfast for 29 July–5 August reached a fresh combined total of €5,949.55 including VAT, at the registered-customer rate. The allocation is parents and children in one room, grandmothers in the other. Checkout offered payment at the hotel with no charge now. Membership is required; no account was created.
Cancellation wording conflicts. Checkout shows free cancellation until 23 July at noon, while selected-rate prose says five days before arrival. Use the earlier displayed deadline for planning and clarify the applicable cutoff, time zone and later penalty before relying on it.
Still to confirm: which floor the rooms are on and how the lift reaches them, whether the rooms are close together, and whether they have a shower or a bath.

Benalmádena Costa remains a leading hotel comparison alongside Fuengirola. On 27 October, Best Tritón and Mac both returned complete combined breakfast offers for all six, 29 July–5 August: €5,949.55 and €5,995.75 including VAT respectively. Both rates require membership. Best's cancellation wording conflicts; Mac charges the full amount on 27 July with a 48-hour cancellation rule. Room proximity and exact beds/bathrooms remain open. Coastal Puerto Marina and promenade-level La Carihuela differ from uphill Arroyo de la Miel.

Fresh check — 27 October 2026
Best Tritón: two Double rooms with breakfast, 2 adults plus children 6/8 and 2 adults, €5,949.55 including VAT, registered-customer rate. Final checkout offers payment at hotel and no charge now. It states free cancellation until 23 July at noon, while detailed prose refers to five days before arrival; clarify which applies.
Mac: same dates/party allocation, two Double rooms with breakfast, €5,995.75 including €545.07 VAT, member rate. No payment today; full charge on 27 July. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before arrival, then strictly nonrefundable; exact cutoff hour/time zone remains unverified. This supersedes the older €5,737.48 offer. Neither membership was created.
Only the first target week was refreshed for these hotels. Evidence: Eclipse-2027-Hotel-Refresh-2026-10-27 and saved booking text/screenshots in records/search-2026-10-27/sol.
Historical 18 and 22 October checks
Best Tritón, 29 July–5 August 2027: two Double Rooms with breakfast for two adults + children 6/8 and two adults. The successful 18 October combined member total was €5,949.55 including VAT. On 22 October, the loaded room rates were €3,569.74 + €2,379.81 member, or €3,984.83 + €2,656.53 non-member (€6,641.36 arithmetic). The selector did not complete a fresh combined offer. The visible free-cancellation deadline is 23 July at noon, while the prose says five days before arrival; clarify the applicable deadline, time zone and penalty. Membership requirements and exact room/bathroom allocation remain open.
Mac Puerto Marina, 29 July–5 August 2027: the successful 18 October combined member total was €5,737.48 including €521.59 tax, two Double Rooms with breakfast and the same 2A+2C / 2A allocation. No payment was due that day; the full amount was scheduled for 27 July, with no refund after the cutoff. Cutoff hour/time zone was not shown. On 22 October, all three requested weeks retained the correct dates and six-person party but returned an engine error. Do not turn that into a sellout or call the 18 October price current inventory.

Base rate has kitchenette, no meals. Free cancellation up to 30 days before arrival, credit-card guarantee; deadline time zone and penalty after deadline not supplied. No three-bedroom unit appeared for these dates. This fails the three-bedroom apartment minimum unless Jeremy accepts a compromise; beds, bathroom count, bedroom AC and complete beach route need confirmation. Availability counters are dated observations only.
No availability for W1. Engine alternative 6–13 August from €4,210 is outside the tested week and not a confirmed equivalent six-person offer. Keep Diana 2/REF069 identities distinct until matched. September quotes are historical and superseded for W1.
Eclipse viewing
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Totality on this stretch: 2m54s, about 10:47:30–10:50:24 CEST on 2 August 2027 (module A, IGN-anchored, approximate; exact standing-point timing still needs validation) — shorter than Fuengirola (3m06s), La Cala (3m21s) or Estepona (3m37s).
Sun at about 39° altitude, 97° azimuth, just south of due east.
Walking viewpoint for both properties: Playa Malapesquera (36.5949, -4.5181) — 18 m from Best Triton, 100 m from Diana 2.
No obstruction found: the nearest building in the sun's direction is 297 m away, and even the tallest tagged building within 500 m (30 m) would need to be within about 38 m to block the sun at this altitude. OSM height data is incomplete, so an untagged tall building can't be fully ruled out.
Beaches are public, need no reservation; expect heavy August crowding. No driving needed on eclipse day.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
From the airport: a pre-booked minivan for six, about €68–79 each way (2026 prices). A standard taxi carries four, so six people need two, or one larger pre-booked vehicle at similar cost. The C1 train (€2.05/adult, step-free) is cheaper but impractical on arrival day — it lands at Arroyo de la Miel, 3.17 km from the coastal-strip properties, not at the beach.
Arroyo de la Miel station: 3.17–3.18 km, about 52 minutes on foot, 50–55 m of net climb (about 102 m cumulative on the winding return route) — a taxi trip, not a walk, with luggage. Fine for the train later in the stay, unencumbered.
Daily life: nearest supermarket (Carrefour Market) is about 435–446 m, a 7–8 minute walk crossing Avenida Antonio Machado via a roundabout with pedestrian crossings, not an at-grade highway crossing. About 22 restaurants and cafés within 400 m, a smaller cluster than Fuengirola's.
Stairs near Plaza Olé: 23–24 mapped stairways within 500 m, far more than at the Fuengirola properties. None fall on the routed paths to the beach or supermarket, but the density is worth a personal check before exploring further.
Avoid: Torremuelle (6.6 km from Puerto Marina, a real hill) and Benalmádena Pueblo (a separate hillside village) are not part of this recommendation.
Andalusian tourist tax: none; the region has ruled one out. Portugal leg: see the Portugal–Spain travel facet.
Beach and children
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Sea Life aquarium is about a 5-minute walk from Puerto Marina; Selwo Marina is about a 25-minute walk or a short taxi/bus ride (roughly 3 km); the Teleférico cable car is near Arroyo de la Miel station. This is the strongest concentration of walkable or short-taxi children's attractions among the finalists.
Tivoli World, once the area's flagship attraction, is closed; reopening has been proposed for 2028–2030, so it's unavailable in 2027 regardless.
Beach certification is year-specific and was not refreshed in this integration; check the named beach for 2027.
How gently the beach shelves near Puerto Marina isn't documented here; the broader central Costa del Sol is generally described as sand with a gentle entry, but no Benalmádena-specific measurement was found.
A Benalmádena Pueblo romería reportedly falls on 2 August — unverified, and concerns the inland Pueblo, not the coastal strip.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
From the coastal-strip properties, the routes to the nearest supermarket and beach are flat and under 450 m.
A lift is helpful but not required, as long as any stairs amount to one flight; more than one flight without a lift fails. Diana 2 sits on the 8th floor with a confirmed lift, so this isn't a concern there. The Arroyo de la Miel apartment is 1st floor with elevator and ramp. Best Triton has a lift, but which floor either Double Room sits on, and whether the lift reaches it, isn't published — access to the allocated room still needs confirmation; there is no corroborated outage penalty.
Mac Puerto Marina: staff praised for mobility help; walk-in shower must be requested and confirmed. Best Triton's bathroom type is fully unconfirmed. Diana 2's bathroom count is unresolved between Booking (3) and the host's own text (closer to 2.5).
The real access issue is the train station, covered above: a taxi, not a walk, whenever it's needed. The stairways mapped near Plaza Olé (also above) don't sit on the routine routes but are worth checking in person before exploring further.
Against the family's stated limit (some stairs are fine but not many; a gentle 10-minute climb is fine), the coastal strip passes and the walk up to the station does not.

The regional climatology supports comparing Mediterranean bases with the more exposed Atlantic/Strait coast; it is not a forecast or an exact probability for this town. Do the Double Rooms at Best Triton have a walk-in shower or a bath? Can a specific type be requested?
Can the two Double Rooms be placed on the same floor or adjoining? How many flights of stairs, if any, separate them from the lift, and does the lift serve every floor of both the main building and the annex?
Is air conditioning individually controlled in-room at Best Triton, or centrally controlled?
Is Best Triton's two-room Suite available for these dates, and what does it cost against two separate Double Rooms?
Does Best Triton anticipate any eclipse-week terms — a minimum stay, a surcharge, or a rate not yet released for 2027?
Diana 2's exact building location is a street-level approximation, not a confirmed building centroid.

Town hotel · two rooms · see dates and evidence below
A hotel at Puerto Marina in Benalmádena (see Best Tritón for the area). On 27 October, its booking flow returned two Double Rooms with breakfast for 29 July–5 August, all six guests, at €5,995.75 including €545.07 VAT. This is a member rate requiring free Mac Lovers signup. It replaces the older €5,737.48 quote.
Payment and cancellation: no payment today; the full amount is charged on 27 July, 48 hours before arrival. Cancellation is free until that cutoff, after which the charge is strictly nonrefundable, including changes, shortened stays and no-shows. The exact cutoff hour and time zone were not established. Exact beds, room proximity and bathroom type remain to confirm. Other weeks were not refreshed.
Roquetas de Mar is farther east, near Almería. It belongs in the final comparison because the all-inclusive suite costs about the same as the Benalmádena hotels with breakfast only. Its Portugal flights and transfers have not been priced. Totality is roughly 1½ minutes; the exact walking viewpoint is still to choose.
The suite: 61.3 m², two bedrooms plus a living-room sofa bed, two bathrooms with baths, maximum four adults and two children. It is on the fourth floor. Lift access, bedroom air conditioning and the actual walk to a viewing spot remain unverified. This gives less bedroom separation than La Vega's three-bedroom apartment.
Price:€6,062.40 for 29 July–5 August, all six guests, all-inclusive and VAT included, at the non-member Anticípese rate. This reached the price/details step; it is not a reservation. A lower €5,456.16 member price appeared only at room selection and is not the selected checkout offer.
Cancellation and tax caveats: despite the advance-rate label, the selected terms state no advance payment and offer payment at the hotel. Free cancellation is described both as 24 hours before arrival and before noon the previous day (28 July); the applicable cutoff and time zone need clarification. Late cancellation or no-show costs the first night. Checkout also links to an excluded Balearic tourist tax even though this hotel is in Almería, so any extra local levy remains unresolved. Do not treat the VAT-inclusive total as a verified all-levies price.

Protur is now a serious resort comparison after a 27 October exact-party checkout at €6,062.40, non-member, VAT-inclusive and all-inclusive, 29 July–5 August. Two bedrooms plus sofa bed is a suite compromise; fourth-floor access, bedroom cooling and the complete Portugal routing remain unresolved. Astra recommends comparing it directly with La Vega 14 and Best/Mac, not treating it as a chosen family destination.

27 October update: One Family Suite for four adults and children 6/8 reached the price/details step at €6,062.40 under the non-member Anticípese rate. The checkout says VAT included and offers payment at hotel. Selected terms say no advance payment and late-cancellation/no-show penalty of the first night, but conflict between 24 hours before arrival and noon the preceding day. A generic excluded-tourist-tax link incorrectly points to the Balearics; additional levy treatment is unverified. Club €5,456.16 and flexible €6,736 non-member were room-choice displays, not the selected checkout. Only 29 July–5 August was checked. Evidence is a transcription in records/search-2026-10-27/terra/protur-resort-browser-addendum.md; no raw screenshot was retained. Nothing was reserved.

One 59 m² apartment in Benalmádena that sleeps six, with a kitchenette. The 17 October quote was €3,042 including taxes for 29 July–5 August, with no meals; it was not refreshed on 27 October. Mountain-view and sea-view apartments cost more, and breakfast brings the total to about €3,497. Free cancellation up to 30 days before arrival. The catch: it has only two bedrooms, not the three we want, and the bathroom count, beds, bedroom air conditioning and route to the beach are unconfirmed.
La Cala de Mijas is a compact seaside village between Fuengirola and Marbella. Its centre has a palm-lined square, shops and restaurants near the beach, and a 16th-century watchtower stands on the seafront. Its beach is the best for young children that we found anywhere on the coast: fine golden sand and a shallow, gentle slope into the water. A coastal footpath, the Senda Litoral, starts here. There's no train. A bus to Fuengirola takes about 15 minutes and runs every 30 minutes; that's also how we'd get to the Bioparc zoo.
Staying here means renting an apartment: our own bedrooms, kitchen and living space, a shared pool, and our own schedule for meals.
Eclipse morning: Playa de La Cala. Totality there lasts about 3 minutes 21 seconds. We haven't yet checked a specific spot for buildings in the way.
The apartment: Noria Azul was the best match we found: three bedrooms (two king beds and two singles), two bathrooms with showers over baths, a lift, air conditioning and shared pools, about 800 m from the beach. It's booked for 29 July–5 August and 30 July–6 August. Its published 2027 rate was €1,778.70 a week, which gives a sense of what a La Cala apartment might cost. We still need to find a similar three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in La Cala.

No train. La Cala has no Cercanías station. The nearest is Fuengirola, reached by the M-220 bus, about 15 minutes, running every 30 minutes.
From Málaga airport: a pre-booked minivan is the standard approach used for every other search area, but no La Cala-specific price or journey time was checked in this research.
Daily life: central La Cala offers beach, shops and restaurants, but earlier 808 m measurements had unclear endpoints; check the exact accommodation route.
Bus access: the earlier asserted at-grade A-7 crossing was not established. Verify exact stops, crossings and imagery; do not apply it as a general town disadvantage.
Senda Litoral: the walkable coastal footpath along this stretch of coast starts here.
Day trips: Bioparc zoo is a bus ride away in Fuengirola; Sea Life in Benalmádena needs the bus plus the train, or a taxi.

Central Estepona is a larger town about 1 hour 15 minutes from Málaga airport by road or direct coach. There's no train. It has a whitewashed old town with streets lined with flower pots around a central square, Plaza de las Flores. The main town beach, Playa de la Rada, is about 2.3 km long, with lifeguards, a children's play area with trampolines, showers and beach bars. It's the best-equipped children's beach we found. A 3 km pedestrian promenade links the beach, the old town and the fishing port and marina. El Cristo, a small beach by the marina, is sheltered and suits young children.
It isn't as flat as Fuengirola. From La Rada beach to the old town is about 700 m, with a gentle climb and one flight of steps. From the old town to the port is another 1.9 km with a moderate climb.
We'd rent an apartment, either near the old town and La Rada beach or near the marina and El Cristo.
Eclipse morning: the beach or the promenade. Totality lasts about 3 minutes 37 seconds, the longest of the main options. We haven't yet checked a specific spot for buildings in the way.
Apartments so far:
El Faro (EST31): three bedrooms for six, near the port, with a lift and a shared pool. The booking calculator showed €1,200 for the week including fees, but it doesn't say which year's rates those are, and the availability calendar wouldn't load. Bathrooms and bedroom air conditioning are unconfirmed.
Puerto Alto 6469: three bedrooms and two bathrooms, capacity six. On 22 October its calendar marked the requested eclipse weeks booked. The €1,502/week summer tariff plus €150 cleaning is not an available offer. Access and exact bed allocation remain unconfirmed. Puerto Alto
Venalmar: four bedrooms with bedroom air conditioning, close to the beach but about 10 km outside Estepona. On 27 October, its published live window began 12 August–9 September, so it no longer covers any target eclipse week. This is a changed calendar signal, not a submitted-date rejection. Older tariffs are not available offers. Venalmar · Terms
Villa Buenavista: a hillside villa with a private pool and views. A car is needed to get anywhere. The published rate is €10,500 a week from 1 August.

Central Estepona belongs in the first comparison: choose La Rada/old-town or marina/El Cristo as distinct daily neighborhoods. Dot’s review supports sheltered El Cristo for family beach time. Do not assume all streets or the port-to-old-town walk are level. On 22 October, Puerto Alto’s calendar marked all three target weeks booked. EST31 remains a calculator-only lead; Venalmar, 10 km outside town, now lists no eclipse-week availability in its published live window (27 October). Buenavista is a car-dependent hill property.

Current check — 22 October 2026
Puerto Alto 6469: the listing states six people, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The live calendar marked 27–31 July and 1–10 August booked, excluding the three tested weeks. Its €1,502/week tariff plus cleaning is not an available offer. Exact beds and access remain open.
Venalmar, refreshed 27 October: its published live availability now begins 12 August–9 September 2027, so none of the target eclipse weeks is covered. This supersedes the 22 October calendar lead, without claiming a submitted-date rejection. Historical tariffs below are not current offers.
Darya: no new completed date query overturned the earlier calendar exclusion.
Kai Alde, TimeInSpain 19519: the exact 31 July–7 August page remained enquiry-only. The separate €3,500 seasonal tariff is not a quote; the site also mentions a booking fee.
El Faro EST31: no fresh qualifying offer. Do not transfer facts from PALOMA or another El Faro unit.
Published 3 July–28 August 2027 weekly rent €1,502 + €150 cleaning = €1,652, with €200 refundable deposit separate. Not a date-submitted offer. At that earlier check, the calendar did not preserve open/blocked distinctions. The 22 October update above establishes a booked-calendar result and two bathrooms; extra fees, exact beds, stairs/lift, cancellation and the complete route remain unverified.
Four bedrooms sleeping nine; bedroom AC; two upstairs bath/shower rooms, downstairs double bedroom and WC, one flight upstairs. Listed beach 100 m, supermarket 1.2 km. This is a coastal development outside central Estepona, not an old-town/marina daily-life substitute. Official page read on 18 October places Estepona town 10 km away.
W1 not available in full; published opening starts 31 July. July/August 2027 tariff £1,850/week plus mandatory £12.50 per person damage waiver = £1,925 for six by calculation; no damage deposit. Dot recorded the site's EUR display as €2,257 + €91.50 = €2,348.50; these are native site displays, not a Codex exchange-rate conversion. Muse verified waiver in T&Cs. Muse saw 4–31-night choices, narrowing Dot's earlier five-night-acceptance gap; it does not establish an accepted/quoted 31 July–5 August stay or proration. No Sunday changeover; 31 July is Saturday. A full 31 July–7 August week changes the recommended flight plan, which is not booked. Exact quote, cancellation and full approach remain unknown.
Dot's retrieved calendars excluded eclipse week at Darya, Casa Plaza Flores, La Perla Beach Maritimo, Casares Beach Penthouse, Belgravia27 and Belgravia22; cache freshness varied up to a month. Treat these as dated calendar signals, not final sellout findings. Villa Buenavista is hilltop, beach about eight minutes by car; €10,500/week seasonal tariff from 1 August 2027 is historical, not an offer or a price for 31 July. H10 and the accessibility shortlist have no new exact-party offer.
Eclipse viewing
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Totality at Paseo Marítimo Pedro Manrique, central Estepona (36.4283, -5.1356): 3m37s, from about 10:46:22 to 10:49:59 CEST on 2 August 2027 (IGN's published figure; an independent recomputation gave 3m36.7s) — longer than La Cala (3m21s), Fuengirola (3m06s) or Benalmádena (2m54s).
The sun is at about 39° altitude and 96° azimuth, just south of due east, over the sea — the same geometry as the rest of the western and central coast.
No viewing-spot or obstruction check has been done for Estepona. The later finalist-area pass that checked specific beach points and buildings toward the sun for other areas did not cover it; treat any point on La Rada or the port promenade as unverified until walked or checked against imagery.
Climatology (not a forecast) describes the Alboran coast, Gibraltar to Marbella, as faring particularly well against the Atlantic cloud that affects Spain's Cádiz-facing coast — a multi-year average, not a prediction for 2 August 2027.
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
From Málaga airport: about 1h15 by direct Avanza coach. No rail reaches this area — the Cercanías C1 line that serves Fuengirola and Benalmádena ends at Fuengirola. A pre-booked minivan transfer, the mode used elsewhere in this research, was not separately priced for Estepona.
Within central Estepona: La Rada beach to the old town (Plaza de las Flores) is 710 m with a modest 9–13 m climb and one flight of steps; the old town to the fishing port/marina is a further 1.9 km with 33–45 m of climb but no major road crossing. Both legs are moderate, not steep, but they are not flat in the way Fuengirola's seafront is.
Portugal leg: of the areas considered, this western stretch adds the most friction to a Portugal start. Estepona's nearest useful airport is Málaga (Gibraltar is closer on paper but has no useful flight network for this trip), so a Lisbon or Porto flight into Málaga plus the 1h15 road transfer is the realistic route.
Beach and children
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Playa de la Rada runs about 2,300 m and has a lifeguard/vigilance service, a children's play zone with trampolines, disabled access, showers and chiringuitos — the strongest documented children's-facility set of the areas compared in this round.
The pedestrian promenade (about 3 km, La Rada to the fishing port) and the Bulevar connect the beach, old town and port on foot.
Beach certification is year-specific and was not refreshed in this integration; check the named beach for 2027.
Beach surface is sand; it was not specifically flagged as steep-shelving in the sources checked, though the gentle-entry evidence here is thinner than what was found for La Cala de Mijas.
Access for grandmothers
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
El Faro/EST31 has a confirmed lift — a genuine plus, though not on its own the deciding factor under the family's rule (a single flight without one would still be fine). H10 Estepona Palace also has a lift; its eclipse-window availability is unresolved (see Accommodation options). Estepona Port Apartment JEAN has no lift and is on the 5th floor, likely disqualifying regardless of flight count. Casa Mata Belén and Violeta are multi-level without lifts; verify stair counts. Belén’s under-7 policy needs checking. Violeta’s 27+ lead check-in age does not by itself exclude accompanied children; verify the actual wording.
The walking routes within central Estepona carry real, if moderate, climbs — 9–13 m over 710 m to the old town, a further 33–45 m over 1.9 km to the port — gentle enough for the family's stated limit (a gentle 10-minute climb is fine), but longer and less flat than Fuengirola's seafront. The one flight of steps on the old-town route is the part to check.

Elviria is a resort area on the coast about 10 km east of central Marbella and 45–50 minutes from Málaga airport. A week here would centre on the resort itself: pools, gardens and the beach. Marbella's old town is a taxi or bus ride away.
Eclipse morning: the beach at the resort. Totality lasts about 3 minutes 17 seconds.
The resort: Don Carlos has flat gardens leading down to a sandy beach. It has a children's programme for ages 4–12, a children's pool, three lifeguarded water slides, a playground and tennis. Two connected Junior Suites (a king and two double beds, two bathrooms) with breakfast cost about $18,489 with 10% tax added, with free cancellation until 22 July. That's more than twice the price of the town hotels. A two-bedroom duplex with a kitchen costs more, about $20,811, and puts someone on a sofa bed.
Still to confirm: sources disagree about accessibility, so we'd need to check directly with the resort.

22 October update: The 22 October Marriott form did not complete an exact-date, six-person request, so no current room price, availability or rate terms were returned. Málaga airport: about 45–50 min by road (approximate). No rail link; taxi/transfer or rental car.
Elviria hotels are ~10 km east of Marbella center — town access by car, taxi, or bus. Beach life at the hotel needs no car.
The Marbella-center apartments need no car for daily life: beach 200 m, old town 5 min, garage included at apartment #3.

Sandy beaches through flat gardens at Don Carlos; flat paseo for walking.
Children's pool, 3 lifeguarded water slides, playground, Rafa Nadal tennis at Don Carlos; kids' club and slides at Marriott's.
The town beach near the old town is Venus Beach (~7 min walk from apartment #11).
Pool fencing is rarely stated in listings; verify before booking (diligence, not a gate — kids are 6.5 and 8.5).

The 22 October search returned six exact-party apartment quotes in Torre del Mar across 29 July–5 August, 30 July–6 August and 31 July–7 August, plus a complete Leonardo hotel quote for the middle week. Market signals

September reporting recorded increased eclipse interest, but it does not prove any town is sold out. A no-result booking search can mean restricted allocation, channel or dates, unreleased inventory or sold rooms.

Jeremy may consider a fallback after checking the selected terms. La Vega 14 and Torre Plaza reached final price screens, but their advertised free cancellation conflicts with the linked general contract; do not rely on a refund promise without clarification. Each takes 30% of rent plus cleaning/utilities initially and the remaining rent the day before arrival, with a separate €100 refundable security deposit.
Leonardo’s 30 July–6 August offer is €7,281 including VAT and breakfast, free cancellation before 27 July; payment timing and cutoff hour remain unverified. Best’s 18 October combined member quote was €5,949.55 including VAT, with contradictory cancellation wording. Mac’s 18 October combined member quote was €5,737.48 including tax and breakfast, full payment on 27 July and no refund after the unspecified-hour cutoff; the current engine failed. Current availability must be reconfirmed before acting on those older totals.

Questions are for Jeremy to decide whether to send; no contact made. For Avilés & Norling, establish the binding cancellation schedule, refund treatment of every prepaid charge, pool opening dates, stair-free entrance and key collection. For hotels, confirm payment timing, membership eligibility, exact beds, room proximity and allocated bathroom/access. Best Tritón’s numeric cancellation deadline conflicts with its five-day prose. Leonardo’s latest VAT inclusion is resolved; Protur’s current quote and tax status are not. EST31 and Venalmar need actual exact-party offers. Puerto Alto’s tested weeks are calendar-blocked.

Heading retained for stable links; no common November opening date exists. The useful gaps are the new apartments’ cancellation and physical-fit questions, renewed complete Mac/Best offers, central Estepona/La Cala replacements, and Marriott/Iberostar inventory when their forms return valid searches. Do not repeat unavailable Noria or Puerto Alto as bookable bargains or rank towns by booking-engine accessibility.

Compare native currencies separately until a dated exchange rate is adopted. Do not add VAT again to Leonardo’s 22 October €7,281 total or the complete 18 October Mac/Best totals; those already include it. Older prices retain their stated tax basis. The new apartment totals include displayed €100 cleaning and €49 utilities for seven nights; no further VAT line was added at checkout. Their €100 refundable security deposit is separate from rent. Include meals, flights, bags, seats, transfers, date changes and optional services. Venalmar’s damage waiver is a fee, not a refundable deposit.

Google showed $7,585 international plus $1,700 internal. Longer connection buffers and no predawn departure from Spain, but about $2,277 more than BA/Iberia. The airline page did not reproduce the selected price.
These are 12 October prices, not rechecked airline fares. All are totals for six before bags and seats.

Recommendation
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.
Use Lisbon and Málaga for the current flight shortlist. Approximately one week in each country, in either order; all six leave from SFO together. No overnight connections. The preferred cost-and-comfort candidate is Portugal first, 21 July–5 August, with one connection on each international journey and a nonstop midday flight between the two holiday weeks.
Choose a pre-booked vehicle with six passenger seats and room for luggage for airport transfers. Ground travel depends on the exact town: Marbella/Elviria and Torrox are farther from Málaga airport than Fuengirola or Benalmádena. Earlier 4½–6-hour Nazaré-to-coast estimates should not be applied to every destination.
Plane
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.
The live searches on 12–13 October 2026 found nonstop Lisbon–Málaga flights with TAP/Portugália and Ryanair, around 1h15–1h25. Prefer a daytime flight to avoid a predawn departure from Nazaré or a late hotel arrival in Spain. The exact date changes both schedule and price.

Train
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.
Not practical. There is no direct or through-ticketed Lisbon–Málaga train, and no direct Madrid–Lisbon train has existed since the sleeper Trenhotel Lusitania was discontinued in 2020. The current route runs Lisbon → Badajoz → Madrid on regional trains (about 9–11 hours, across two separate ticketing systems, CP and Renfe), then the Madrid–Málaga AVE (about 2h20–2h50). Total: roughly 12–14+ hours over 4–5 separate legs, most realistically needing an overnight stop rather than one long day. Reported plans to revive a Lisbon–Madrid service are unofficial and unconfirmed for 2027.
Car and bus
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.
Driving is an estimated 7–8 hours from Nazaré to the Costa del Sol — not a directly sourced figure, extrapolated from a shorter Algarve-to-Fuengirola benchmark — plus a one-way cross-border drop fee of roughly €195–250, and it's unconfirmed whether a 7–9 seat vehicle can actually be hired one-way from Portugal into Spain. Bus (Lisbon–Seville by FlixBus or ALSA, then on to Málaga) runs 13–16+ hours. Both are weak options for this party and are an emergency fallback, not a planned choice.
Arriving at Málaga airport
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.

For the central Costa del Sol towns under consideration (Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos), the choice is a pre-booked minivan, two standard taxis, or the Renfe C1 Cercanías train.
Minivan — the arrival-day recommendation. Pre-booked 6-seat minivans run about €62–79 to Fuengirola and €68–70 to Benalmádena (2026 published prices, several operators). This supersedes the transport note's earlier suggestion of taking the C1 train on arrival.
Two taxis. A standard Málaga taxi seats only 4 passengers, so six people need two cars. Metered fares run about €36–54 to Fuengirola and €29–34 to Benalmádena Pueblo, each — roughly double the single-taxi rate, plus the hassle of splitting luggage and people across two vehicles.
Renfe C1 train. €2.05 per adult, about 30–45 minutes to Fuengirola. The airport, Fuengirola, and Benalmádena–Arroyo de la Miel stations are all reported step-free, but the C1 is an ordinary commuter train with no luggage racks — fine off-peak once the family isn't carrying bags, but not the arrival-day choice with two grandmothers, two young children, and two weeks of luggage. Benalmádena's station is also 3.2 km from the coast and uphill, a further reason to skip it there on arrival day.
Other candidate regions have their own transfer profile: western Costa del Sol (Estepona, Sabinillas) is about 1h15–1h20 from the airport by minivan or the direct Avanza coach; the Costa Tropical (Almuñécar) is about 1 hour by car, with a slower direct bus (about 2 hours) and minivan service likely available but not separately confirmed.
Long-haul flights and open-jaw tickets
Research updated 2026-10-13. Prices retain their original check dates.
SFO–Lisbon is nonstop on TAP; SFO–Málaga has no nonstop route in the current SFO list. An open-jaw ticket means flying into one holiday airport and home from the other. Buy the Lisbon–Málaga holiday transfer separately; it is a week away from the international journeys. Keep each same-day connecting journey together on one ticket.
Best supported balance: Portugal first, 21 July–5 August
Portugal 22–29 July; Spain 29 July–5 August: fourteen destination nights. International flights $6,307.74 on BA's own summary for all six, plus TAP €624.08 for the internal flight (Google approximately $700). Combined base budget approximately $7,008, before checked bags and advance seats; exchange rates/payment currency can change it. Checked 13 October.

5 August
Iberia: AGP 09:10 → SFO 16:20
Madrid 2h15, total 16h10; IB528 + IB355, sold by BA
All times local. Heathrow's 1h45 is airline-sold but less generous than a 2–3-hour connection for six travelers. Returning at 09:10 still needs an early transfer, especially from Elviria or Torrox, but avoids a 06:35 airport departure.
Economy Basic includes cabin baggage, with checked bags and advance seats extra. Google showed Standard Economy at $7,748 international, including a checked bag per passenger but still charging for advance seats: about $8,448 with the internal base fare. That upgrade may cost more than adding only the bags needed. Exact bag-and-seat totals remain unpriced; no passenger details were entered.
Simpler TAP schedule: Portugal first, same dates
Google showed $5,623 international + $700 internal = $6,323 for six, but TAP's own open-jaw engine did not reproduce the nonstop outbound or that price. Reapplying the same search did not resolve the mismatch. Treat this as an unresolved lead, not a bookable price.
The return requires a predawn transfer from the Spanish accommodation. On the tested 6 August pairing, Google returned 23–27-hour Lisbon layovers, which fail the no-overnight rule. Moving the return to 5 August produced the same-day option. Starting 22 July instead gives only thirteen destination nights and a $5,743 international Google price.
Spain first: daytime arrivals with Air France
Spain 29 July–5 August; Portugal 5–12 August: fourteen destination nights. Google showed $7,585 international + $1,700 daytime internal = $9,285 for six, before bags/seats, checked 13 October. The airline handoff landed on Air France's homepage and did not reproduce the selected fare.
28 July: SFO 15:05 → AGP 16:15 on 29 July, Paris CDG 2h40 connection, 16h10 total.
This avoids a predawn departure from Spain and has more generous layovers, but costs about $2,277 more than the BA/Iberia base budget.

Eclipse-2027-Shortlist-Synthesis-2026-09-19 (current state and corrections)
Atlantic coast · current six-person offer unresolved. Conil de la Frontera is a town on Spain's Atlantic coast with calm family beaches and one of the longest totalities we found, about 4 minutes. The trade-off is weather: morning sea cloud is more common on the Atlantic side, and we don't plan to drive away from it on eclipse morning. The Gran Conil hotel has children's pools and a kids' club. Its earlier alternative week missed the eclipse; the 27 October public-web checks of Gran Conil and Fuerte Conil did not establish an exact-party offer. This does not establish a sellout. A new three-bedroom apartment lead, Ilusión del Mar, has unverified second-floor access, dates and cancellation terms; its nightly calendar display is not a checkout quote.

Summary
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Conil is a conditional Atlantic alternative after Mediterranean candidates. Gran Conil returned no W1 offer. Its priced 23–30 July alternative misses the eclipse. Morning marine cloud is a trade-off under the no-driving-on-eclipse-day plan; there is no assumed mobile weather chase.

This alternative misses the 2 August eclipse and is not an eclipse stay. No adapted room category appeared; full room-to-beach path remains to verify. Other September apartment/villa leads have no new quote; the Nicolas 3BR/1BA apartment fails the bathroom minimum.

Fuerte Conil has roll-in showers in select rooms per third-party reports only; request explicitly and confirm.
Villa Lucia has zero stairs anywhere. Villa La Contenta keeps grandmothers on the ground floor. The Nicolas apartment's floor and lift status are unstated — verify.
Old-town cobbles limit casual wandering; both grandmothers walk, handle one flight of stairs, and manage a gentle 10-minute climb.

The regional climatology supports comparing Mediterranean bases with the more exposed Atlantic/Strait coast; it is not a forecast or an exact probability for this town. August heat, shade and bedroom AC matter. Water temperature, wind, waves and entry conditions vary by beach and day. Earlier local numerical claims were not verified by the supplied audit and should not drive the ranking.
Hillside villa · car needed. Salobreña is a small coastal town east of Málaga with a hilltop old town too steep to stay in. Villa Royal is a four-bedroom, four-bathroom villa with a pool on the hillside outside town, so we'd need a car. It has no price or availability for our dates, and its steps and bedroom air conditioning are unconfirmed. Beaches here are mixed sand and gravel and get deep quickly. Totality lasts about 1 minute 40 seconds. A beach-level apartment here could be worth a look.

Summary
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Villa Royal is a car-dependent hillside option at Monte de los Almendros, not a central beach base. Private space and a pool may appeal, but the October listing did not reproduce the earlier step-free and child-gate claims. Beach-level Salobreña remains a separate, flatter proposition.

Villa Royal, Monte de los Almendros
The Vrbo page checked 12 October lists four bedrooms, four bathrooms, sleeps eight, private heated pool, kitchen, washing machine and air conditioning. It showed two reviews, with 10/10 displayed. Beds were double/queen; a sofa bed was mentioned. Beaches and restaurants require a short drive.
September claims of a step-free entrance, two ground-floor bedrooms and a child safety gate on request remain historical listing evidence requiring confirmation. No dated 2027 price, exact availability or cancellation terms were obtained. Do not describe the villa as confirmed step-free or walkable to the beach.

Playa Puerta del Mar, Almuñécar, looking toward the Peñón del Santo rock. The gravel at the water's edge is typical of the beaches here.
Almuñécar is a town further east with a seafront promenade, a water park and a bird park. The beaches near the hotels are dark sand and gravel, and totality lasts about 1 minute 51 seconds. Two hotels are priced for 29 July–5 August with 10% tax added. Helios: two Triple Rooms, €5,758.50, or €6,220.50 with breakfast, partly refundable. Toboso: two small Triple Rooms with breakfast, €4,335.10, nonrefundable. Neither confirms a lift or a walk-in shower.
Other places we looked at:
Sabinillas and La Duquesa: waterfront towns west of Estepona, with longer totality, about 3 minutes 49 seconds. One agency returned no three-bedroom offers for the tested eclipse stays on 22 October, despite offering ordinary July dates. That does not establish that the area is sold out.
Torre del Mar: now has two priced apartments in the main comparison above. Rincón de la Victoria remains a possible substitute east of Málaga, with shorter totality.
Nerja: the apartment found has only two bedrooms and one bathroom, and the Parador hotel is closed for renovation during the eclipse.
Cádiz: one promising three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment with a lift, but no confirmed dates, and it's on the cloudier Atlantic coast.
Sotogrande: further west, with the longest totality we found, about 4 minutes 15 seconds, but the villa options and their prices are unresolved.
Motril (Playa Granada resort area) and Málaga city: kept for reference; neither has a suitable confirmed option yet.

Almuñécar remains a secondary town-and-waterfront comparison. Muse found W1 two-Triple-room prices at Helios and Toboso on 17 October. Toboso is cheaper with small rooms and nonrefundable terms; Helios has an unresolved partial-refund deadline. Mixed sand/gravel varies by beach; no blanket beach dismissal or best-reviewed-hotel claim is warranted.

From Málaga airport: about 1h+ by car (roughly 80 km). No rail line reaches Almuñécar. A direct Alsa coach runs from the airport to Almuñécar/La Herradura, about 5 departures a week (Monday–Friday) per one source plus a reported daily "Supra" service; the journey takes about 2h, slower than driving because of stops. Group minivan or private-transfer availability for this route was not confirmed the way it was for the Costa del Sol towns.
In town: urban bus line 3 (Estación de Autobuses–Taramay route) runs past the San Cristóbal seafront and out to Calabajío beach.
Portugal leg: see the Portugal–Spain travel facet. Flying into Málaga still suits this area, at the cost of the extra hour of driving.

Puerta del Mar, San Cristóbal and Caletilla — the beaches next to every candidate hotel — are dark sand and gravel. San Cristóbal is described by the town hall's own service sheet as "arena-grava" (sand-gravel), dark and medium-grained with fine local gravel. Caletilla is dark sand, boulders, gravel and pebbles, much of it artificially placed in 2015.
Calabajío, the one confirmed gently-shelving beach, is about 3.3 km away (straight-line distance) and reachable by urban bus line 3 or by car; it has disabled-access provision per the town hall. A foot-routing check found no direct coastal path, only a hillside route with a 225 m climb each way and a 20% sustained pitch — possibly a routing artifact, but either way a bus-or-car trip, not a walk.
Aquatropic (water park) is in town on the coastal Paseo Reina Sofía. Its walking distance from Puerta del Mar was checked, but the elevation data returned was erratic and is flagged unreliable.
Loro Sexi (bird park) is about 1.2 km from Puerta del Mar, with a confirmed moderate climb (12% sustained over about 150 m). High-season hours (July–August) are published as daily 10:30–13:30 and 18:00–21:00.
No 2027 Feria date has been published; the patronal festival has run 9–15 August in recent years, which would begin after the family's planned check-out if the pattern holds — inferred from history, not confirmed for 2027.
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Neither Hotel Helios nor Hotel Toboso confirms a lift or a walk-in shower. Under the family's rule, that gap only matters if a candidate Triple Room sits above the first floor — neither hotel publishes room-level floor plans, so this is unresolved rather than disqualifying.
Both hotels sit on flat seafront ground; the walk between them and San Cristóbal/Puerta del Mar beach is flat.
The route to Loro Sexi has a confirmed, moderate climb. The route to Calabajío is a flat bus/car trip, or on foot a climb that needs verifying before it can be ruled manageable.
No accessibility survey was found for either hotel.

Whether the Calabajío walking route's 225 m climb is real terrain or a routing artifact; Aquatropic's walking distance and climb was also flagged unreliable.
A viewing spot and sun-obstruction check for Almuñécar, as done for the Fuengirola and Benalmádena finalists.
Hotel Suites Albayzín del Mar's actual distance from the Puerta del Mar/San Cristóbal core — the only property found that fits the whole party in one unit with a full kitchen.
Whether Hotel Helios's minimum-stay rule affects the family's planned stay length, and its actual cancellation deadline.

Summary
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Nerja remains a secondary town-and-beach option with route and slope variation. Ona’s reviewed sleep-six apartment has two bedrooms, a sofa bed and one bathroom, so it fails the three-bedroom/two-bathroom apartment requirement. Other apartment leads need exact identity, bedroom AC, access and dates. Parador’s renovation excludes the eclipse; official reopening notices differ, without changing that conclusion.
Accommodation options
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Ona Marinas’ official sleep-six layout is 2BR/1BA: four twins and a double sofa bed. Do not promote it as a compliant single-unit option. Reconsider only a different qualifying unit or an explicitly accepted relaxation.
Earlier HC Burriana Playa, Balcón de Europa and Vrbo/Airbnb apartment leads remain historical, without a fresh dated six-person quote. Parador is unavailable during renovation; Riu Monica is adults-only. The Toboso Apar-Turis repricing allegation is uncorroborated and supplies no exclusion penalty.

Totality: 1m32s (representative estimate), about 10:45–10:52am CEST on 2 August 2027.
Beachfront viewing from Playa El Playazo or Burriana needs no driving on eclipse day.
Shorter duration than the western towns — totality ranks last as a criterion.
Getting there and around
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Málaga airport: about 50 min by road (approximate).
Ona Marinas is ~3.5 km outside town: beach days need no car; town trips by hourly bus (~€1) or taxi (~€7.50).
Apartment #4 is walkable: Burriana Beach 2 min, Balcón de Europa 11 min, flat walk to center.
Beach and children
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Burriana is the family beach; beaches drop off fast — less gentle for small kids than Cádiz sand.
Mini club + games area, day-and-night entertainment, separate children's pool, lagoon pool at Ona Marinas.
The Caves of Nerja are a possible half-day excursion but are not flat terrain for grandmothers.
Access for grandmothers
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Apartment #4: 19 steps, no lift — verified family-of-6 stay including grandparents (Aug 2026), so within tolerance; luggage a factor.
Ona Marinas: six lifts, but accessibility reports conflict (amimir: common-areas access only; voyage-prive: not accessible for reduced mobility) — confirm directly.
HC Burriana Playa: lift, roof-terrace pool.
Base at beach level; avoid the steep old town and coves as a base.

Summary
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Evidence date: accommodation details here are September leads, not newly verified October offers. The refreshed comparison favors the Málaga-area shortlist; see the opening summary.
A flat city on a peninsula: promenade beaches, full medical and transport infrastructure, and genuinely walkable old town. The apartment lane is strong here — a ground-floor 3BR and a lift-served 3BR/3BA — plus a TUR4all-verified Parador.
For: flat everywhere; two apartment options that sleep six under one roof; full city infrastructure; 2m54s of totality.
Against: crowds are a planning concern without a comparative 2027 forecast; historic-center parking is described as "un INFIERNO" with resident-only zones; the Parador skews adult and needs 2–3 rooms.

"Authentic Cadiz experience, historic centre" (Airbnb), old town
3BR (3 double beds), sleeps 6: parents, grandmothers, and kids each get a double; bunk bed rated 6+ in the kids' room. Ground floor — 3 steps only. Kitchen + washer + dishwasher + microwave. No pool. 5-min walk to seafront, shops, and restaurants; large private patio (rare in Cádiz). License VUT/CA/068041. 4.9/5, ~445–451 reviews. Red flags: bath count unstated; ground-floor street noise possible (host says rooms away from street); no price signal in the research.
Casa Plaza San Antonio, historic center
3BR/3BA, 200m², sleeps 6. Lift confirmed. Kitchen + washer + dishwasher + oven; terrace; laundry service. No pool. Cathedral 6-min walk, La Caleta 12 min, Plaza de las Flores 5 min, market nearby. From ~£226/night non-eclipse. 9.7/10, 38 reviews. Red flags: €200 damage deposit payable in cash only; bed sizes not itemized — confirm.
Parador de Cádiz
Seafront, 124 rooms, renovated. TUR4all-listed: entrance stairs plus independently usable ramp, 2 adapted rooms, ground-level/roll-in shower with grab bars, adjustable head, fixed seat, lift. Children's pool, playground, interconnecting/family rooms — but it skews adult. Six needs 2–3 rooms (~€500–900/night in August, non-eclipse signal). Caveat: bathroom lacks a 150 cm turning circle.

More about Sotogrande / San Roque
Updated 2026-10-18. Includes dated historical leads.
Summary
Research updated 2026-10-18. Prices retain their original check dates.
Sotogrande/San Roque villas remain low priority unless private-pool living justifies driving. A specific marina/near-beach apartment could be a separate option. Longer totality does not offset daily logistics automatically. This is one of several western Mediterranean choices, alongside Estepona and Sabinillas.

Dot could not securely match the original Villa Luz, ref 7640811 or Marriott Pier leads. A similarly named Interhome Villa Luz was elevated, on three floors and 1.5 km from the sea; do not transfer an internal-lift claim across listings. Tres Palmeras’ retrieved page described six bedrooms/six bathrooms and a generic monthly tariff, conflicting with earlier four-bedroom notes. No exact-party eclipse quote is established.

Costa Tropical working port town in the path, with 1m41s totality (sweep figure; representative). Distinguish inland Motril, the working port and the Playa Granada resort district. No exact-week all-in cost ranking is established.
Research is thin. The notes contain only two hotel snippets for Motril. No apartment or villa picks surfaced for the town. This file is honest about the gap: Motril is a practical fallback base, not a researched contender.
For: beachfront resort options at Playa Granada and town services; in the path.
Against: only two hotel snippets of evidence; no apartments or villas found; working port town, modest loveliness; Playa de Poniente has rock platforms after new breakwater works.

Summary

Promote waterfront Sabinillas/La Duquesa for a focused qualifying-apartment search. Beachfront services and marina dining may suit daily family life without a large attraction list. Uphill Manilva developments are a separate proposition. A 22 October Duquesa Estates search returned no qualifying exact-week offers; that is not a town-wide sellout. Nine-night historical prices are not seven-night comparisons. Local wind/water conditions need evidence, not transferred Tarifa statistics. Approximate totality is not the longest in the expanded guide.

22 October check: Duquesa Estates returned no three-bedroom matches for four adults and children 6/8 on 29 July–5 August, 30 July–6 August, 31 July–7 August, or the five-night 31 July–5 August variant. The same party and bedroom filter returned 32 offers for 9–16 July 2027. That proves the engine can quote 2027, but cannot distinguish all booking restrictions from occupied or withheld dates, or describe inventory outside this agency.
Booking.com snapshots from 2026-09-20, 9 nights (29 Jul – 7 Aug 2027); only a 9-night figure exists for each, no 6–7-night price was checked. The exact names "San Luis de Sabinillas" and "Puerto De La Duquesa" returned no properties; the wider "Manilva" search found three, 99% flagged unavailable.
Hotel Apartamentos Manilva Sun. Fitting six needs a 2BR plus 1BR apartment combined: about €9,213 (VAT-inclusive estimate, both units, checked 2026-09-20). "On a hill above the Costa del Sol" per its own description; guest reviews mention a lift; non-refundable.
Casa Oasis. Billed as three bedrooms, but only two and four beds shown — one short. About €6,331 (VAT unconfirmed estimate, checked 2026-09-20), 1.1 miles from the beach, two reviews only.
Villa Bahia de Las Rocas. Four bedrooms with a pool, the most expensive property found in this whole research: about €32,269 (VAT unconfirmed, checked 2026-09-20), 3.6 miles from downtown Manilva.
Hotel Doña Luisa and Hotel Don Agustín, beachfront in the centre, have no family suite or confirmed lift; six people need two or three double rooms.
Duquesa Harbour Club Aparthotel, Puerto de la Duquesa, fits access needs best on paper (lift, A/C, kitchen, about 200 m flat to the beach), but its largest confirmed unit sleeps about four; a second unit was not priced.
A "3 Bed Villa – Sleeps 6" listing is the right size on paper, but both source pages failed to load, so address, terrain and price are unconfirmed.

Sun at about 39° altitude, 96° azimuth, east-southeast over the sea; no regional terrain, including Gibraltar, obstructs the view, though buildings right behind a specific spot are unchecked. No driving is needed on eclipse day; beaches are public, though heavy crowds should be expected.

About 1h20 by road from Málaga airport; a pre-booked minivan is normal for six people. No rail link — Sabinillas sits west of the C1 line serving Fuengirola and Benalmádena. The A-7 crossing on both measured routes is a confirmed tunnel or underpass, the earlier blanket at-grade-crossing penalty for La Cala is unverified. Centre to beach is 391 m, flat; centre to Puerto de la Duquesa is 1,637 m, about 20 m of climb each way, 5.1% steepest sustained — mild, useful for evening dining.
Beach and children
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Sabinillas beach holds Blue Flag status, is about 1,700 m long, with lifeguard cover, showers and a children's play area; one source also describes a seasonal inflatable water park. The town reads as an authentic fishing village, likely calmer at night than Estepona, though chiringuito noise in August is plausible and unconfirmed. No aquarium- or theme-park-scale attraction was found here.

Both measured routes are flat or nearly so, and the A-7 is crossed by underpass, not at street level. Lift and bathroom type are unconfirmed at Hotel Doña Luisa and Hotel Don Agustín. Duquesa Harbour Club has a confirmed lift but too-small units. Manilva Sun has a lift but a reported roughly 15-minute walk down to the beach and back — beyond the family's 10-minute-climb tolerance — and a bathtub rather than a walk-in shower per one review. Bathroom and shower type were not confirmed for any property.

How places were chosen
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
Areas are judged in this order: kid compatibility and parental ease first, then grandma access, then price, then Mediterranean setting, then weather, with totality duration last. (Jeremy, 2026-09-21.) This replaced the earlier order that ranked grandma access first.
The family bases on the Mediterranean side — the Costa del Sol and, as a second tier, the Costa Tropical near Almuñécar — plus the Cádiz/Strait coast. The Atlantic side (Vejer and the towns near it) was set aside when the family chose the Mediterranean.
Sixteen towns have active pages in this guide, including Torre del Mar added after the 22 October exact-party apartment checks. The places below were considered and not carried forward. Reserve places are kept as substitutes if a leading area falls through; dropped places were ruled out on their own merits.
Reserve
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
La Carihuela (Torremolinos) — 2m48s. Promote promenade-level accommodation into the first comparison: flat promenade and fish restaurants near a C1 train stop, but a hill or stairs stand between the promenade and the town centre and some stations.
Rincón de la Victoria — about 1m57s. A possible substitute east of Málaga; verify accommodation, noise, beach access and transfers. Shorter totality is not a disqualifier. Torre del Mar has moved into the active comparison with two exact-party apartment offers on 22 October; see its separate research page.
Torreguadiaro — 4m02s. Quiet and long totality, but everyday services are thin. (Sotogrande itself now has an active page.)
Dropped
Research updated 2026-10-22. Prices retain their original check dates.
La Herradura — 1m48s. A sheltered bay, but visitor reports consistently describe a pebble beach that deepens within a few metres of the shore, which is poor for young children and grandmothers.
Alcaidesa — 4m10s. A well-equipped beach, but a real-estate source calls a car "practically essential" there, and the measured route from the plaza to the beach is 1.45 km with an 82 m climb back.
La Línea — totality not recorded for the beach in this research. Long totality was its one point in favour, but no family advantage was found.
Cabo de Gata — San José is total, at about 1m30s, but services are sparse and access is remote, which suits neither children nor grandmothers; La Isleta del Moro sits at the edge of the path of totality and its status there is undetermined.
Vejer de la Frontera (with Zahara de los Atunes) — the original inland-plus-beach pick. Set aside when the family chose the Mediterranean side and revised the priorities (Jeremy, 2026-09-19): a walled hill town with no sea view loses on kid compatibility and parental ease first.

The latest accommodation search was 27 October 2026. Sol and Terra used Chrome booking flows; Luna researched western/resort alternatives; Astra independently checked destination recommendations. Both Torre del Mar apartments returned all three target weeks. Best, Mac and Protur returned 29 July–5 August; Leonardo returned 30 July–6 August. Other hotel weeks, Iberostar and Marriott were not refreshed. Older quotes keep their dates. Flights remain the 12–13 October research and were not refreshed.
The central-hotel evidence includes saved page text and screenshots. Apartment and Protur findings were transcribed from visible booking flows; no raw Protur screenshot was retained. Listing claims are not property inspections. Nothing is held, and offers can change.

Party
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Six people: four adults (two parents and two grandmothers) and two children. This is Jeremy's 2026-09-19 answer, resolving an earlier six-versus-eight discrepancy in the research.
Dates and length of stay
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Jeremy requested approximately two weeks on 12 October: one week near Nazaré and one week in Spain. SFO is the home airport and all six depart together. Dates remain a decision; the strongest flight comparison is 21 July–5 August. The Portugal leg, based near Nazaré, may come before or after the eclipse — the family may arrive on the coast from Portugal or leave for it. The eclipse itself is on Monday, 2 August 2027.
At the eclipse destination, the current plan is 5–8 nights (Jeremy, 2026-09-21): arriving 29–31 July and leaving 3–7 August, with at least two nights before 2 August and at least one after. Four nights could be considered, but most places will likely require a minimum of 5 or 7. A 7-night stay could be, for example, 29 July – 5 August (four nights before, three after) or 31 July – 7 August (two before, five after, which suits a Saturday changeover). This replaced an earlier 9-night basis (29 July – 7 August) that had been used for pricing; that window overstates the cost of the planned stay and should not be read as the current plan.
Grandmothers

They can walk, handle one flight of stairs, and manage a gentle 10-minute climb. Regular bathtubs are acceptable; a walk-in shower is preferred but not required. A pool is a plus, but pool fencing is not required. (Jeremy, 2026-09-21.) This limit is looser than the research first assumed: it keeps Benalmádena's flat coastal strip viable and makes a promenade-front La Carihuela property acceptable. It doesn't change which areas are searched first.
Children

Ages 6.5 and 8.5 at the time of travel. Kid compatibility and parental ease are balanced with grandmother access as the main tests of a place (Jeremy, 2026-09-21). Mediterranean setting and weather come after those, price is weighed against comfort, amenities and location, and totality duration ranks last.
Rooms and bathrooms

The research has treated air conditioning in every bedroom as a requirement, because the terral wind can push Costa del Sol temperatures toward 40°C. A lift is helpful but not required where the grandmothers would manage only one flight of stairs (Jeremy, 2026-09-21); more than one flight without a lift fails. Apartments have been judged on having three bedrooms and at least two bathrooms. Shower type (walk-in or bath) is unresolved for several leading properties; the Google Maps photo pass may settle some, and the rest needs a direct question to the property, which is Jeremy's call.
Price, comfort and location
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Affordable is good, but the cheapest option doesn't win by default. Price is weighed against comfort, amenities and location (Jeremy, 2026-09-21).
What we won't do
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
No overnight flight connections (Jeremy, 13 October). Overnight transatlantic flying is expected; airport/hotel stopovers between connecting flights are excluded.
No driving on eclipse day. The Sun will be about 38–41° high, east to slightly south of east. A walkable beach may work, but the actual eastern sightline must be checked; a sea view does not establish it, especially on west-facing Atlantic beaches. Specific spots have been examined only near the Fuengirola and Benalmádena finalists (see "Eclipse day"). This is a research clarification from the 27 October Astra review, not a new family rule.
No booking or contact by research agents. Booking needs Jeremy's own account and personal details, and contacting a property, including inquiry-form ones like the El Faro apartment in Estepona, is his call.

Decisions, next steps and evidence
The trip
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
About two weeks, Nazaré-area Portugal plus southern Spain; six travelers, four adults and children approximately 6½ and 8½. Primary Spanish search 29 July–5 August 2027, with 30 July–6 August and 31 July–7 August alternatives. No overnight connections and no eclipse-day driving. Flight evidence remains dated 12–13 October; it was not refreshed here.
The 27 October refresh supports a three-way comparison: La Vega 14 for apartment space and value; Best Tritón or Mac Puerto Marina for central-coast hotel service; Protur Roquetas for an all-inclusive Family Suite. Astra's independent destination review retains coastal Benalmádena/Fuengirola first overall, but the family's accommodation preference can reasonably change that order. No base, dates or room-sharing arrangement has been selected.
La Vega 14 returned €2,488.70–€2,631.70 across the three seven-night windows. Torre Plaza returned €1,746.20–€1,774.80, without an advertised pool. Both totals include cleaning/utilities, plus a separate €100 refundable deposit. Their selected cancellation policies still conflict with the agency's general contract.
Best Tritón now has a fresh complete two-room breakfast quote of €5,949.55 including VAT for 29 July–5 August, at the registered-customer rate. Mac returned €5,995.75 including VAT and breakfast for that week, with membership required. Leonardo returned €7,281 including VAT and breakfast for 30 July–6 August, non-member. Best and Leonardo show contradictory cancellation deadlines; Mac charges the full amount 27 July with a 48-hour cancellation rule.
Protur Roquetas reached checkout at €6,062.40 for one Family Suite, all-inclusive and VAT-inclusive, 29 July–5 August, non-member. Its rate's cancellation cutoff and generic tourist-tax exclusion need clarification. Roquetas is farther east in Almería; the suite's two bedrooms plus sofa bed and additional travel must be weighed against included meals and resort service. Physical access and bedroom cooling remain to verify.
Venalmar's published live window now begins 12 August, excluding the target weeks. Central Estepona and La Cala remain worthwhile destination ideas without a new qualifying offer in this pass. Conil remains a conditional Atlantic alternative with morning-cloud exposure.
What to do next
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
Compare La Vega's three bedrooms and kitchen with the hotel room-sharing arrangements and Protur's two bedrooms plus sofa bed. Assess pool and meal/service benefits alongside price.
Clarify the applicable cancellation schedules, exact cutoffs and refund treatment. For Protur, resolve the generic extra-tax wording; for the central hotels, confirm membership terms and exact beds/room proximity.
Verify pool operation, bedroom cooling, street access and the actual walks to food, beach and a suitable eastward eclipse viewing point.
Compare current full-trip flights/transfers before changing dates or choosing Roquetas. Prior flight prices are not current quotes.
Property contacts, holds and bookings remain Jeremy's decisions; agents made none.
How much to trust this
Research updated 2026-10-27. Prices retain their original check dates.
The 27 October browser searches completed all three target apartment weeks; Best/Mac/Protur for 29 July–5 August; and Leonardo for 30 July–6 August. Other hotel weeks and five/eight-night variants were not fully tested. No fresh offer was obtained for the Conil hotels. Iberostar and Marriott were not refreshed. Missing results are not sellout evidence.
Hotel evidence includes saved DOM text and screenshots. Apartment and Protur evidence is transcribed from visible booking flows; no raw Protur screenshot was retained. Exact-party offers may change. Listing features are not property inspections, and calendar/tariff leads are not checkout offers. Regional climatology is not an eclipse-day forecast; actual viewing points still need checking.

Generated from maintained Markdown. The dated research notes and booking evidence remain in the Travel project. The public 22 October prices and terms records the new apartment offers, hotel refresh and cancellation conflicts; the 18 October evidence record preserves the earlier integration. The September synthesis remains the family decision history. Nothing is booked or held.
